Two Fun Frugal Easter Recipes
For Easter, I was searching the internet for a Resurrection cookie recipe and came across that recipe and another fun and frugal Resurrection roll recipe. They both are very inexpensive and are great object lessons for the kids.
For some reason I can not find the site I found them on but I do remember the blogger I read also could not remember where she had acquired the recipes either.
Most of the items for both recipes you probably already have on hand or in your stockpile. I had to buy one item from each recipe but so far my kids loved the Resurrection rolls. Next up the Resurrection cookies!
RESURRECTION COOKIES
You need:
• 1 cup whole pecans or chocolate chips
• Mixing bowl
• 3 egg whites
• Wooden spoon
• 1 cup sugar
• Bible
• 1 tsp. vinegar
• Zipper baggy
• 1 pinch of salt
• Wax paper
• Cookie sheet
• Tape
Preheat oven to 300 degrees.
Place pecans or chocolate chips in the baggy and let the children beat them with the wooden spoon to break into small pieces. Explain that after Jesus was arrested, He was beaten by the Roman soldiers.
Read John 19:1-3
Let child smell the vinegar.
Put 1 tsp. into mixing bowl.
Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross, He was given vinegar to drink.
Read John 19:28-30
Add egg whites to the vinegar.
Eggs represent life. Explain that Jesus gave His life for our life.
Read John 10:10-11
Sprinkle a little salt into each child’s hand let them taste it then brush the rest into the bowl.
Explain that represents the salty tears shed by Jesus followers, and the bitterness of our own sin…
Read Luke 23:27
So far the ingredients are not very appetizing.
Add 1 cup sugar.
Explain that the sweetest part of this story is that Jesus died because He loves us. He wants us to know and belong to Him.
Read Psalm 34:8 and John 3:16
Beat with mixer on high speed for 11-15 minutes until stiff peaks are formed.
Explain that the color white represents the purity in God’s eyes of those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus.
Read Isaiah 1:18 and John 3:1-3
Fold in broken nuts or chocolate chips.
Drop by tsp.onto waxed paper-covered cookie sheet.
Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus body was laid.
Read Matt. 27:65-66
Put cookies sheet in the oven.
Close door and turn oven OFF.
Give each child a piece of tape and seal the door.
Explain that Jesus tomb was sealed.
Read Matt. 27:65-66
Go to bed!
Explain that they may feel sad to leave the cookies in the oven overnight.
Jesus followers were in despair when the tomb was sealed.
Read John 16:20 and 22
On Resurrection Morning open the oven and give everyone a cookie!
Notice the cracked surface and take a bite.
The cookies are hollow!
On the first Resurrection Day Jesus followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty.
Read Matt. 28:1-9
He Has Risen! Hallelujah!
RESURRECTION ROLLS
Resurrection Rolls
Each item represents how Jesus’ body was prepared for burial.
• Large marshmallows
• Melted butter
• Sugar/cinnamon mixture
• Can of crescent rolls
1. Open can of crescent rolls and separate into triangles. The rolls represent the linen wrapping used in covering the dead.
2. Dip and roll one marshmallow (representing Jesus’ body) into melted butter. The butter represents the oils used in anointing the dead body.
3. Roll the marshmallow in the sugar/cinnamon mixture. The mixture represents the spices used in burials.
4. Place the marshmallow in the center of the crescent triangle. Fold and pinch the edges tight. Put each crescent-wrapped marshmallow on a slightly greased cookie sheet.
5. Bake the rolls as directed on the package. The oven represents the tomb.
When cooked, the marshmallow melts leaving only the puffed crescent roll. This demonstrates how Jesus rose from the dead. All that remained in the tomb were the linen wrappings.

A confession and a great deal!
I have a confession to make: I have not been a good penny-pincher these past few months. Ever since the earthquake in Haiti, our lives have been a little crazy. I feel like I've been at least 2 weeks behind on everything - including couponing! I have 3 weeks worth of coupons to clip, and I think I might have used 5 coupons these past 2.5 months! Eek!
As you might have noticed, that also has meant that I haven't been good at finding (and reporting on this blog) good deals that are going on! Thanks for your patience. I think that these next few weeks should be good for catching up on things (although I haven't even starting our income taxes - double eek!).
Having said that, I wanted to let you know about a GREAT deal going on at Mary Hunt's website. I've talked in the past about her great books on finances and penny-pinching. Well, they're having a "Garage Sale" here with many of her books for $1.99 plus shipping. I HIGHLY recommend the "Live Your Life for Half the Price." It normally retails for over $23, but since these are missing the dust jackets, they're only $1.99. Even with the estimated $3.77 shipping ($4.16 for 2 books), this beats Amazon's deal by almost $15!
